William Lyman Underwood was a naturalist and photographer with wide-ranging interests. Known for his wildlife stories and photographs, Underwood also studied bacteriology and entomology, and wrote reports, illustrated with his own photographs, on insect pests such as mosquitoes, houseflies and gypsy moths.
